Dr. Alexander Gardner, Director of The Treasury of Lives, will discuss his new book, The Life of Jamgon Kongtrul the Great, the first-ever extensive biography of Tibet’s most famous nonsectarian Buddhist lama. Well-known for preserving Tibetan Buddhist lineages in an era of great political strife, Kongtrul is one of the most important figures of the 19th-century Rimé period. Discussion and reading will be followed by a Q&A and book-signing with the author.

The Life of Jamgon Kongtrul the Great

“Your mind won’t be found elsewhere.
It is the very nature of this moment-to-moment thinking.
Regard nakedly the essence of this thinking and you find
present awareness, right where you are.”
– Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Tha

A Landmark of Tibetan Studies: Jamgon Kongtrul (1813-1899) forever changed the face of Tibetan Buddhism by collecting, arranging, and disseminating the various lineage traditions of Tibet across sectarian lines. This accessible and engaging work is the first full-length historical biography of Kongtrul available in English

A Pivotal Moment in Tibetan History: Jamgon Kongtrul was at the center of a turbulent political and religious period in Tibet. He was a founder of the nonsectarian Rimé period of Tibetan Buddhism.

An Egalitarian Figure: Jamgon Kongtrul’s championing of diverse spiritual traditions will appeal to modern Buddhist practitioners.
