About this Event

Join us for a three-session course introducing the contemplative methods of Advaita Vedanta.

A non-dualistic, time honored path of philosophy and practice, Advaita Vedanta offers an abundance of tools for obtaining enlightening insight. Together we will survey the revered texts, narratives and radical thought experiments of Advaita Vedanta, dive into the surprising delights of this ancient Indic wisdom tradition, and meet the unconventional masters of its methods.


Each 90 minute online session includes 30 minutes of meditation and practical guidance in contemplative methods of Self Inquiry.

Session One – (April 13): The Perennial Path of Self Inquiry

*Considering Self Inquiry in light of the imperative of deep introspection found in world wisdom traditions.

*Zero in on the Upanishads: Memorable tales of intrepid seekers and the iconoclastic sages who instructed them.

*Discern the core themes of the Upanishads, and utilize their explicit maps of consciousness to light the way to non-dual awareness.

Session Two – (April 20): Identity, Illusion, Transformation and Freedom

*Understand the Vedantic view of the world Illusion, the ego, and the ultimate reality

*Learn the interior mental processes taught by the 9th century spiritual genius, Adi Shankara, for honing “moksha” – the maximal detachment of spiritual liberation.

*Contemplate the bracing lessons of sage Ashtavakra, the multiply disabled boy who used unorthodox ways to teach enlightenment to a king.

*Hear the mind-bending narratives of the Yoga Vasishta – instructive stories told by his Guru to young Prince Rama, to dispel his existential despair and help him remember his true identity.

Session Three – (April 27): Great Vedantins of the 20th Century.

*Come to know these extraordinary 20th-century masters who taught the philosophy and methods of Advaita Vedanta and who embodied the ideals of Self Realization.

*Swami Vivekananda 1863-1902 Swami Ram Tirth 1873 – 1906 Ramana Maharshi 1879 –1950 Nisargadatta 1897- 1981.


Mary Reilly Nichols, Director of Nalanda Institute’s Yoga, Mind & Spirit, has been teaching meditation and yoga philosophy for over 3 decades. She spent ten years teaching a breath based therapy in the treatment of stuttering and now teaches breathing, mindful practices and stress management in corporate and medical settings. Mary holds a BA in anthropology from Harvard University, and completed five years of residency in the meditation ashrams of Swami Muktananda both in India and in the US.
