Between the 8th and 12th Century, at the foothills of the Himalayas, a radical system of Tantric yoga practice known as Kashmir Shaivism flourished. Its philosophies and practices are directly related and often identical with the tenets of Tantric Tibetan Buddhist teachings.

In this three part series, you will get an overview of the Shaivite literature and gain a practical understanding of its simple, elegant and liberating methods to inspire your meditation practice or to begin a new one.

Each 90 minute class includes two breath-based meditation sessions.


Session 1: Shiva the Yogi | Monday, June 15; 7-9PM EST

Survey the historical and cross-cultural representations of Shiva for a deeper appreciation of his enlightening, instructional iconography.

Discover the medieval “Vira Shaivites” the radical egalitarian sect whose poetry celebrates the human body as the foundation of the spiritual quest.

Learn abut the three “malas” – subtle veils of illusion.

Focus on mantra technique and explore the pragmatic Shaivite philosophy of “Matrika Shakti”: Working with the the power of word and speech.


Session 2: The Core Kashmir Shaivite Texts | Monday, June 22; 7-9PM EST

Sample the teachings from the “Shiva Sutras” a  sacred “agama”considered  a divinely inspired text.

Practice selections from the 112  bliss generating thought-experiments of the  “Vijnana Bhairava Tantra”

Probe the sublime theory of consciousness offered in the “Pratyabhijna” -School of Recognition – and the “Spanda Karika” – Doctrine of Vibration.


Session 3: The Glance of Shiva | Monday, June 29; 7-9PM EST

The theory of Shiva Drishti or enlightened seeing.

Develop the simple skills of attention taught in Kashmir Shaivism which give rise to the dawning of the non-dual unitive vision.

Explore the Guru Gita, the unparalleled Sanskrit chant encoding the highest metaphysical teachings of Kashmir Shaivism.

Mary Reilly Nichols, Director of Nalanda Institute’s Yoga, Mind & Spirit, has been teaching meditation and yoga philosophy for over 3 decades. She spent ten years teaching a breath based therapy in the treatment of stuttering and now teaches breathing, mindful practices and stress management in corporate and medical settings.

Mary holds a BA in anthropology from Harvard University, and completed five years of residency in the meditation ashrams of Swami Muktananda both in India and in the US.
