Stop Surviving and Start Thriving: The Foundations of Self-Healing and Contemplative Life

Mindfulness does not mean just being present in the here and now, but using presence of mind to stop the wheel of survival and start thriving in awareness, kindness, and freedom.This first class of the Nalanda Institute Four Year Program in Sustainable Happiness covers the foundations of contemplative self-healing in the Buddhist tradition: the healing insights of Buddha’s four noble truths; the four applications of mindfulness practice; and the life-strategies of loving-kindness, right livelihood, and non-violent social activism. It unpacks these foundations in terms of current breakthroughs in the neuroscience of stress and trauma,  as well as the revolutionary findings of neuroplasticity and the transformative brain effects of meditation. Weaving ancient wisdom and modern science together, it focuses on how to build a contemplative life in the world, comparing the Buddha’s eightfold path with the eight limbed path of yoga, as well as modern paths like psychotherapy, recovery, and creativity.

Semester One Retreat
Saturday, November 4; 10AM-5PM

Retreat: Turning Everyday Trauma into Self-Healing and Well-Being
Instructors: Drs. Joe Loizzo and Mary Reilly Nichols

Starting with simple mindfulness and Hatha yoga, this retreat helps people ground basic practice in the self-healing principles of the four noble truths and the maps of contemplative living laid out in the eightfold path, the eight limbs of yoga, modern recovery and psychotherapy. It shows how the four truths line up with four scopes of mindfulness—of the breathing body, balanced sensitivity, open awareness and content of experience—yielding the four insights that free us up for contemplative life. The retreat will focus on using focused and open mindfulness to help ground, guide and speed the cultivation of healing insight and self-compassion in everyday life.

About the Presenter

Dr. Joe Loizzo

Joseph (Joe) Loizzo, M.D., Ph.D., is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and Columbia-trained Buddhist scholar with over thirty years' experience studying the beneficial effects of meditation on healing and learning. He is is Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry in Integrative Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he researches and teaches mind/body health. He has taught science and religion, the scientific study of religious experience, and the Indo-Tibetan mind sciences at Columbia University, where he currently is adjunct Assistant Professor of Religion at the Columbia Center for Buddhist Studies.
