“The Three Principal Aspects of The Path are the basis of the entire sutra and tantra paths.”
- – H. H. The 14th Dalai Lama
Tsongkhapa’s purpose in writing the Three Principal Aspects of the Path was to distill the essence of Buddhism by describing the three sequential paths that lead to Enlightenment. We begin on the first path when we understand samsara and commit ourselves to the Renunciation of our own suffering. When we recognize that all sentient beings are suffering and we begin to develop Bodhichitta, we have embarked on the second aspect of the path. The third path requires the understanding that all suffering is caused by ignorance of the true nature of reality. Realizing the true nature of reality is called Wisdom, and the essence of Wisdom is the realization of Emptiness.
