Transforming the Mind: The Gradual Path of Wise Compassion
Geri Loizzo

The Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science offers a Four-Year Program in Sustainable Happiness tailored to help you build a contemplative life in our high-stress age. Each course integrates three core disciplines of contemplative learning: knowledge, meditation, and action, and involves weekly two-hour classes, homework practice based on assigned texts and meditations, as well as a final, take-home essay exam. Courses culminate with a daylong retreat, reinforcing the insights, skills, and life strategies taught in the preceding classes.

Transforming the Mind: The Gradual Path of Wise Compassion, (Year Two/Course Four in the Sustainable Happiness program), is taught by Geri Loizzo. This course teaches the contemplative art and science of social-healing and self-transformation based on the practice of transforming the mind (lo-jong), refined at the ancient Nalanda University, and distilled in Chekawa’s Seven Point Mind Training. Integrating all three vehicles of Buddhist thought in one format tailored to lay life in a stress-driven world, mind-transforming teaches an industrial strength version of loving-kindness. As for practice, the class combines deep mindfulness and insight meditation with the transformational arts of equalizing our empathy for all, loosening identification with rigid self-concepts, building positive social emotions through taking care and giving love, and shifting identification from a reactive to a proactive, compassionate self through role-modeling imagery. Prerequisites: some exposure to mindfulness, loving-kindness, hatha yoga or the gradual path. This class is open to all who meet the prerequisites, whether or not you’ve taken previous Four-Year Program course.
